To save the town’s inhabitants, 20 teams of sled dogs transported a vital anti-toxin over 674 miles (1,085km) of ice and snow, in just six days, through the most brutal winter conditions for decades. In 1925, the small Alaskan town of Nome was in the throes of a deadly diphtheria epidemic. SeptemLyngen, Troms og Finnmark, Sweden-Norway Seppala introduced the work dogs used by Native Siberians at the time to the American public the breed came to be known as the Siberian Husky in the English-speaking world…. Named after Heihachiro Togo, a Japanese Admiral who fought in the war between Russia and Japan (1904-05), Togo was the lead sled dog of Leonhard Seppala. Though Balto often gets the credit for saving the town of Nome, it was Togo, a Siberian Husky, who led his team across the most dangerous leg of the journey.
